Sage Wisdom

"Good improvisation communicates harmonic progression melodically. Effective melodies manipulate harmonic content through the use of guide tones and preparatory gravity notes, masterfully woven in systematic tension, release, and transparent harmonic definition."

February 6, 2008 | Fine Woodworking Preview

An incredible opportunity to look under the hood and into the work of a JazzMando personal fave, the ground-breaking finish work of North Carolina builder/pioneer, James Condino. In this time-compressed ten minute video for Fine Woodworking Magazine, the artist shows us some of his dye process secrets which he describes as "a dance," "Add some color, wash with water, add more color, wash some more, and perhaps add some accents to perk up the color."

The legendary green Condino Cricket mandolin

His famous green Cricket mandolin caught our eye several years ago, and became a permanent feature in our collection of "Builders for the 21st Century." We've since had the privilege of getting to know this genius builder and recent columnist for Mandolin Magazine; we're proud to call him our friend.

View online video: "How to Create a Sunburst Finish."

While it's obvious his instruments are spectacular; the video reveals this stunning observation: Condino himself is a good-looking man, too!...
