Sage Wisdom

"Good improvisation communicates harmonic progression melodically. Effective melodies manipulate harmonic content through the use of guide tones and preparatory gravity notes, masterfully woven in systematic tension, release, and transparent harmonic definition."

Better to have a spare set anyway...

Two immutable forces brought us to the JazzMando Lab to develop the JD13 JazzDola strings. One, the incredible success and overwhelming popularity of the JM11 mandolin strings we developed for what we thought would be for a very niche market this past year developed into a much broader acceptance than we anticipated. Two, our own interest in the deep tenor of the Mandola register and the lack of any similar product to meet this need...

After six months of testing, getting gauge, metal composition, and (surprisingly) length, we've found our answer. Mandolas are not as consistent in scale lengths as their smaller sisters. We needed to accommodate 16 and 17 inch instruments, and a tad longer. Also, the variation in tailpieces, the Gibson style, with its longer reach and wind around pins under the cover, required a little extra metal. This challenge made it difficult to come up with a compromise length for the silk wrapping characteristic of the Labella and Thomastik flatwound series. Some of the smaller scale instruments won't exploit the stabilizing advantage of this feature, but they will still work nicely.

The string specs appear light, but bear in mind, flatwound strings are more compressed; you will be capable of a bigger sound than you might anticipate, and be rewarded with lighter action, and arguably, better fretting finger control. The smooth feel of polished metal also helps the player avoid fatigue, and be able to tackle better the chromaticism of more sophisticated genres of Jazz, Classical, and Cerebral Folk music.

Note, unlike most popular mandola sets, the JD13 string construction process is more "viola-like" than guitar; price comparison to professional viola sets (only 4 there) should offset initial sticker shock. Further, string actually longevity makes the admittedly high price tag an economic advantage. Sealed in tarnish-resistant packages, the tighter string wrap resists the natural corrosion of playing, finger oils, and oxidation, yielding a longer string life. If you don't like to change your strings often, these will make you very happy!

What else makes JazzMando Strings special: You already knew strings will wear from playing. Skin oils, picking, and longterm vibration cause the string to decay and lose tone over time. What you may not be aware is oxidation in the package has the same residual effect! Other brands of strings hanging on a store shelf can be purchased new, but suffer the hidden effects of months, if not years of deteriorating right in the package. Labella's proprietary four-step process, including "Tarnish Proof Technology" means your strings are delivered factory-sealed, freshness second to none. JazzMando order procedure takes this a step farther, ordering in smaller case quantities to assure maximum string vitality.
